3 Reasons You Should Visit Berlin This Year

Berlin, Germany has the unique quality of being cool, modern, and historic at the same time. Whether it’s a stop on your tour of Europe or your only destination, visiting Berlin is a must at least once in your lifetime. Below are just a few of the reasons why this city can’t be missed!

Museum Island

Go for the History

Berlin has a great amount of historical sites, from the former site of the Berlin Wall and WWII memorials to beautiful cathedrals, palaces, and museums. There is just so much to see and absorb. The Berlin Wall memorial is an Instagram favorite located at the center of the city. There are traces of border obstacles on display to help visitors truly comprehend the division between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Visit the impressive Berlin Cathedral to view a jaw-dropping, ornamental edifice with its 100 sarcophagi and burial monuments from five centuries. Travel over to Berlin’s Museum Island, located on the River Spree, to tour some of the best museums in the world. And, of course, there’s the Holocaust Memorial—a hauntingly beautiful display of over 2700 concrete slabs on a sloping field, commemorating the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. There really is no end to the historical treasures one can find in Berlin.

Records show Zur letzen Instanz has been in the same location since 1621, making it Berlin’s oldest restaurant.

Go for the Food

For those of you who’s knowledge of German food ends at sauerkraut, pretzels, and beer—there’s so much more to experience! With a rise of immigrant groups and local innovation, there’s a little something for everyone. If you want some suggestions on what to eat, how about trying Weiner Schnitzel: veal cut really thin, coated in flour and egg wash, rolled in breadcrumbs and fried. You could also try local favorite, Käsespätzle, a kind of pasta covered with lots of cheese. Eisbein, pickled ham hocks boiled or grilled and served with potatoes, is also a local favorite. You can’t be in Berlin and not try Currywurst, a favorite of the street foods. It’s boiled then fried sausage served with a sauce using traditional ketchup and curry powder. Ask some locals where you can find the best Currywurst and you may start a debate of epic proportions! Don’t be afraid to try foods with ingredient combinations you would never try at home and names that are hard to pronounce. You may just be surprised at how much you’ll love German food. There are plenty of restaurants and street vendors to choose from, so go and explore the culinary delights of Berlin!

Go for the Nightlife

After a full day of wholesome touring, Berlin is a great place to let it all hang out when the sun goes down. There’s something for everyone because Berlin nightlife is known around Europe for its inclusivity. From casual, trendy, and artsy, to techno, hip-hop, pop, reggae, and DJ’s–  tailored to pretty much every taste and community. There are even some clubs that have 24-hour nights where the party is going on all day and all night! If you’re looking for a musical smorgasbord, try Plastic, for instance. This club is located in a spacious, repurposed industrial complex with three dance floors.  It features musical acts with international appeal and nurtures local acts as well. Wherever you go, some tips to keep in mind are to wear comfortable shoes !
